My Story
Growing up in a diverse and inclusive family, I was surrounded by members of the LGBTQ+ community. At the age of four, I was adopted by two caring Quebecers who had already opened their hearts to a little Haitian girl, making me a proud, big sister.
My childhood unfolded in Sherbrooke, QC, with countless memories and travels across Canada. Although my journeys took me far and wide, my English is still a work in progress! From a young age, I loved playing with children and once dreamed of having a big family of my own. Today, as a mom of three, my dream of being surrounded by children is fully realized through Tikito.
In the ’90s, I attended a francophone public school—a unique time in so many ways. I faced challenges with racism but also encountered people who changed my life for the better. These experiences inspired me to create a place where love, joy, and laughter are the cornerstones of everyone’s day.
Before I became the owner of Le Monde de Tikito, I spent a decade working as a caregiver. Having been a loyal customer of Tikito for five years, I was thrilled and surprised when I saw that the center was up for sale. While my years as a caregiver were filled with joy, especially when I could bring smiles to the people I cared for, I felt it was time for a new adventure. Becoming a business owner when my middle child was just three months old was a monumental step, but it was a challenge I was ready for.
I spent three years as a single mother before meeting the love of my life. Together, we’ve been blessed with two wonderful children, and he’s also contributed his graphic design talents to our journey. I fondly refer to him as “the man who works behind the scenes.” Michael, with his warm smile, sense of humor, and tech expertise, has played an essential role in shaping Tikito into what it is today.
About Tikito
Tikito was founded in 2013 by Olivier Jacquot and changed hands several times before I became the owner. I knew this small business would come with its own set of challenges, considering the fluctuations in revenue and the high rent due to its large space. But with plenty of ideas and boundless energy, I was excited to take it on.
The real challenge arrived when I purchased the business on December 13, 2019. Just a few months later, in March 2020, COVID-19 hit, and Tikito was forced to close. There I was, stuck at home, the new owner of a business I couldn’t even open, with debts piling up in the middle of a global pandemic. I was ready to give up before I’d even had a chance to feel like a true business owner.
After months of forced closure, I had a moment of clarity. It was a beautiful sunny day, and after exploring every corner of my small house, I didn’t know what to do with myself. The park, the beach… everything felt dull, and my back was aching from the monotony. I thought, if only there were a clean, fun place where I could take my daughters—a place where they could play, ignite their imagination, socialize, and improve their agility, all while I relaxed in comfort. And then it hit me—I already had that place! I owned the perfect business for that. I just needed to persevere and push past the tough times.
So, I picked up my phone, sent emails, and reached out to municipal, provincial, and federal organizations, as well as banks and credit unions. Through sheer determination and with the understanding of the Galeries Orford property owners, I managed to keep the business alive. The support of our customers helped me stay open to this day. I’ve had to adjust prices to keep Tikito running despite the accumulated debts, but my hope is that Tikito remains a beloved gathering spot in the hearts of the people of Magog and Sherbrooke.
I continue to diversify our offerings, invest in the business, and keep the facilities modern. My vision is for Le Monde de Tikito to remain a welcoming, inclusive family space and an essential tourist attraction. I want everyone who visits to feel right at home. We work to make sure there’s fun for all ages while maintaining a clean and safe environment. Tikito is much more than just a play structure; it’s a story of family, friendship, and connection… it’s truly child’s play.
